I suddenly didn't know what to say.
It was clear that Isabelle hadn't told her mother we had broken up. I felt uneasy about being the one to deliver the news. Hearing her kind words weighed heavily on my heart, but I knew I couldn't keep this a secret or delay it any longer. The longer I waited, the harder it would be to explain.
So, I gritted my teeth and said, "Bonnie, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I just broke up with Isabelle today. I can't come over for dinner anymore."
"What?" Her voice was filled with shock. "Bryce, what are you talking about? You were just fine, and didn't you propose? How could you break up? What happened? Did Isabelle do something wrong?"
She didn't think I was the reason for our breakup. Instead, she questioned her own daughter. That just showed how good of an impression I had made on her, which made my heart ache. I had intended to treat Isabelle's parents like my own and honor them for life, but now that opportunity was gone.
