"Sophia, come home with me," I had said.
I wanted to take Sophie home because I hadn't wanted to spend my birthday alone, and I certainly hadn't wanted her to spend it with someone else.
When Sophia had seen me standing there, she had smiled brightly, and her words had been deeply cutting.
