Chapter 149: Adulteration

I woke up tired.
The exhaustion quickly spread from my body to my mind as I smothered a yawn. “I didn't want to wake up,” I murmured. My dream was the only place where Marie’s anger toward me didn’t exist.
From upstairs, I could hear soft music playing in the house, soon accompanied by quick footsteps that stopped directly outside my door.
“Damian?” Julie called out, her voice grating on my nerves. “Babe, you need to wake up. The sun’s already up.” Her words were followed by a knock, and I sighed as I threw off the sheets and sat up.
“Damian?” She called again with another knock.
“I’ll be down in a few minutes,” I said, swinging my legs off the bed and standing up.
“Alright, babe.” I cringed, listening to her go downstairs. “I’ll have to find a way to make her stop calling me that.”
I didn’t leave the room until almost thirty minutes had passed. It wasn’t because I was doing anything; I just wanted to prolong not looking at her.
