I shut and locked the door behind me just as the tears began to stream down my face. They weren't tears of pain or sorrow, but of deep betrayal as I realized there wasn’t really anyone I could trust.
Not even Crystal.
“Marie…” I heard her call out from behind the door, her voice immediately followed by a soft knock. “I'm really sorry…”
“Please go away,” I murmured as I moved to make sure the door was locked.
“Charles was wrong,” her voice came again, shakier. “You need to believe me…”
“Go away!” I yelled, losing every bit of control I had over my anger. “I don't want to talk to you, please!”
It was silent for a long moment before I finally heard the sound of footsteps receding.
For the rest of the night, I hid in my room, only briefly worrying about Amelia before waving my concern aside because I knew Crystal would take care of her.
