I sat at the edge of my bed, clutching the crumpled note in my hand. My eyes scanned the hastily written words again. Taylor’s writing was barely legible, and each line was written with a kind of frantic urgency that only added to the unease in my gut.
“Marie, I’m sorry I had to leave like this. Please stay away from Charles. He’s not who you think he is. You’re in danger… Stay safe. -Taylor.”
My throat tightened, and I swallowed hard, the action making my Adam’s apple bob nervously. My fingers clenched the note so tightly that my knuckles turned white, and the paper crinkled under the pressure. Taylor was gone.
I felt a small kick in my belly, reminding me that I wasn’t entirely alone. My baby, At least I had my child. But Taylor’s warnings didn't leave in my mind, removing any relief I might have felt.
