Chapter 15 As if He Obtained Some Great Treasure
The Huas had never expected that the youngest member of their family, whom they always thought to be not outstanding at all, could be so appreciated by the Jiangs and the heir to their empire.
Everyone could tell from Jiang Liu's tone that he treasured his newly-wedded wife. It was not condescending at all.
The Huas had five daughters. The eldest, Hua Feng, and the second, Hua Qing, had already gotten married and were over 30.
Even though the third, Hua Zhi, was still single, she was already 28. Xie Dongyang was only 26—two years her junior.
Furthermore, Hua Zhi was an A-list celebrity who had achieved Best Actor awards, so judging from her achievements and temperament, she would never look up to a playboy like Xie Dongyang. After all, he had been involved in various scandalous affairs with many female stars.
Hua Lin was a university lecturer and taught history. She was already 26, but even though she was still a bachelorette, she had a boyfriend who was a policeman, and they were really into each other.
She had refused to enter into the arranged marriage with the Xies. Besides, her looks were ordinary compared to her sisters, and there was a possibility that Xie Dongyang might not take a liking to her.
It was only arriving at such a juncture that the Huas thought about their youngest daughter, Hua Sheng, who they had left on Mount Zhongcui many years ago.
On the other end, Hua Sheng had agreed to the wedding not because she was amiable or soft-hearted. Rather, it was because of Grandma Hua.
The old lady was pleased to receive her granddaughter in the backyard.
Two caretakers supported her as she attempted to get up from her bed. Hua Sheng hurried over and placed a soft pillow behind her grandmother's back.
"Sheng... you came back?" the old lady said, grasping her grandchild's hands.
"How have you been these few days, Granny?"
"Hmm... I'm slightly better."
"That's good. What did you eat for breakfast?" Hua Sheng asked in concern.
"I ate quite a fair bit, I even drank half a bowl of porridge," the old lady replied, smiling kindly.
Hua Sheng nodded and sat down on a chair beside the head of the bed. She looked at her grandmother, her heart aching slightly.
"Sheng... I've heard about what happened during the wedding. What you did was right. Even though we might be less rich than the Xies, we can't let them play us like this."
Hua Sheng smiled somewhat unconvincingly.
"How's that Jiang kid? Are they treating you well?"
Ever since the wedding ceremony, Hua Sheng had been living with Jiang Liu in his family home and had not come back to the Hua residence.
The old lady could only try to gather as much information about her granddaughter as she could. It wasn't much, and Hua Sheng's well-being became a cause of concern for her.
"Don't worry, Granny. The Jiangs... they treat me extremely well."
Hua Sheng had chosen to use the word "extremely" to allay her grandmother's fears.
"My child... I know that you wouldn't tell me even if they mistreated you. Sheng... I brought you up, and I told you that I wanted you to get married not to use you as a pawn to resurrect this family's business, but rather because I'm worried that no one will take care of you after I'm gone. You'll be so lonely, and I can't possibly live to see our family restored to its old glory anyway."
"You're still very healthy, Granny. You'll live past 100 years." Hua Sheng hurriedly cut in.
The old lady smiled and coughed a little.
Hua Sheng anxiously passed her a tissue.
"I'm already 84, and I've lived long enough. I can't keep you company in this world for much longer. I know... I hope that you'll be treated well by your in-laws, no matter which family you marry into."
Before Hua Sheng could reply, the old lady asked, "Where's that Jiang kid? He came along with you, right? Let me take a look at him."
"Granny... there's not much to look at. He's just... a normal person with ordinary looks."
Hua Sheng did not want her grandmother to see Jiang Liu for fear that he would spout nonsense to her. Besides, she did not feel that their relationship was real, so there was no need to blow things out of proportion.
Who knew how long their marriage could last? Perhaps, they might even get divorced before three years had passed. These sons of rich families were well-known to be extremely fickle-minded.
Suddenly, a clear-sounding voice rang out from the doorway.
"How could you speak ill of me to Granny, Sheng?"
Hua Sheng trembled. "Sheng? How could you address me so intimately? I'm not that close to you, all right?"
