"The way he talked about the Impressionists," Ella mused one evening as they sat surrounded by notes and documents. "It was like he had firsthand knowledge."
Lucas nodded, rubbing his tired eyes. "And remember how he always seemed to know exactly what to say to charm people? It was like he could read minds."
They compiled a list of Gregory's habits, mannerisms, and slip-ups, hoping to find some pattern that might lead them to his true identity. But every lead seemed to hit a dead end.
"It's like chasing a ghost," Lucas said frustratedly, tossing aside another useless report.
Ella sighed, leaning back in her chair. "Maybe we should take a break. Get some sleep and look at it with fresh eyes in the morning."
Lucas nodded reluctantly. "You're right. We're not doing Gregory any favors by running ourselves into the ground."
