Elara's hands and feet had gone cold. A myriad of scenes flashed through her mind—The Blessed One that had been pinned on the floor, and a regal-looking man crying as he stared at his phone screen with "mutation" printed across it.
How could it be? Nathan was a Blessed One? It couldn't be true.
Ashley noticed how Elara's face had gone ashen. Confused, she asked, "What's wrong?"
Elara snapped back to her senses. Her chest felt impossibly tight as she looked at Ashley, her good friend who she had grown up with. "Nothing's wrong," she murmured.
It was a lie. Everything was wrong. Elara felt like she was suffocating. She had to find out what was inside the rejected documents in Nathan's office. She had to find out what had happened that would force the base to silence someone forever to hide the truth.
