CHAPTER 87 THE MISSION

I stood by the door, my hand on the excellent brass knob, when I heard my father's voice behind me. "Minerva," he said, his tone calm yet laced with curiosity.
"Where are you off to at this hour?" I turned slowly, trying to mask my annoyance with a practiced smile. "Just going for a walk, Dad. I need some fresh air."
He arched an eyebrow—the sceptical look I had come to dread. "At this hour? It's almost midnight."
I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. I couldn't sleep. I thought a walk might help." He took a step closer, his eyes searching mine.
"Minerva, you've been acting strange lately and going out at odd hour. Is there something you're not telling me?" I felt a pang of guilt.
Lying to my father was never easy, but I couldn't risk him knowing the truth and still waiting. "Everything's fine, Dad. Really." I hope it's not what I am thinking.
