Tara was much too manipulative. She'd seen Caleb coming and deliberately said those things to provoke me, making me say things that were hurtful to him.
I hurried over to him and grabbed his hand. I explained, "It's not like that, Caleb. It's not like what you heard."
He looked at me coldly, his gaze filled with disappointment and mockery. "I've heard enough, Carissa. I've got to give it to you—no one has ever dared play me like this. You're the first."
He didn't bother listening to the rest of my explanation and hurriedly left.
No one could easily accept the fact that they'd been used, let alone someone as proud as Caleb. He had to hate me.
