Laird understood more profoundly than anyone that individuals like him could never truly be pure, never remain unmarked by shadows. On the surface, he might appear refined, luminous, and amiable, but he was acutely aware of the reality. He recognized the depths to which he had sunk into illegal dealings to fortify his influence and seize everything he had ever longed for.
Given his character, Laird knew that Jaxson would exhibit a level of ruthlessness beyond what he could even conceive. There was no need for Laird to elucidate this truth to Catherine. She would intuitively grasp it. However, her infatuation with Jaxson rendered her oblivious to reality.
Noticing the rejection of his advice by Catherine, Laird’s patience wore thin. "Perhaps you're unaware of the real reason behind the early demise of Jaxson’s father."
Catherine, being enamored with Jaxson, was acquainted with every aspect of his life and, of course, had heard of this matter. "I understand him," she claimed.
