With a loud pop, the entire room flinched. Cliff, who was startled out of his wits, gave a little jolt. Then, as if determined to face his fears, he reached out to grab another balloon—only to pop it himself.
The sudden burst scared him all over again, and his tiny face scrunched up before he burst into loud, wailing sobs. Grace quickly scooped him up, cradling him as she patted his little bottom and laughed.
She teased, "You messed with the balloons and scared yourself, and Hazel didn't even blame you for it. You've got some nerve crying!"
But instead of calming down, Cliff cried even louder. Grace sighed, gently rocking him. "Okay, okay. I won't scold you anymore."
Just as she managed to soothe him, Abigail twisted another balloon and—pop. Another explosion rang through the room.
Cliff immediately shrieked, setting off another round of hysterical crying. At that point, he had had enough—he wanted Oliver.
Oliver, who had only been free of his precious son for barely ten minutes
