My mind is racing a thousand miles a second. I can’t wipe the hint of caution and hesitation laced in that small smile my mate rewarded me when I gifted her the black tourmaline necklace. I had my men search within a fifty mile radius for that stone. I know she’s read those notebooks in and out, I sometimes catch Adeline huddled under the covers in the middle of the night staring at the endless pages of scribbled handwriting. I thought she’d recognize it and be thrilled but instead I could pick up that something is wrong and she’s not telling me.
My wolf picks up on it too, it’s like she’s hiding something; holding back from her own mate. He hasn’t stopped pestering me to fix whatever it is. I want to push her but I know if I do, she’ll shut me out further.
