Olivia had not been talked to in years. A strained politeness had replaced their first reunion. Physical and emotional distance had become an essential protective barrier.
John turned to face Marie and questioned, "Should I answer it?"
Marie thought for a bit before shrugging. You have the last say, she said. "But don't feel obligated."
After hesitating, John inhaled deeply. He mumbled, "Maybe it's time," and hit the answer button.
Olivia's weak, hesitant voice cracked over the phone, "John?" "It's Olivia."
John and Marie looked at each other, a question lingering in the air. In his opinion, this call may serve as a transitional point leading to a new phase in which tolerance and understanding would ultimately find a home.
"Hello, Olivia," John stated in a firm tone. "How can I help you?"
The call went on, an intimate exchange of cautious optimism and unsaid regrets. John's countenance became contemplative as he hung up the phone.
