The hospital was a small, pathetic thing. It looked nothing like the type of place the Darwins, or anyone affiliated to them, would go for health care.
Yet, this was where Brenda's investigations had landed her.
She was holding a bouquet of flowers as she walked up to the front desk. “I am here to see Cara, I heard she has been receiving treatment in this hospital. I'm her friend.”
“Oh really?” The nurse did not even seem as enthusiastic as the words might show. “Patient number 23 has not had a visitor ever since she was brought in here by the good people who found her by the side of the road.”
“Yeah, Cara does not have a lot of friends.” Brenda answered, “it's unfortunate, what happened to her. And it's even more sad to know that no one has come to cheer her up and support her.”
“Tell me about it.” The nurse said dryly, flipping through some shredded old notebook. “If this place was not government run, we never would have taken her in, because who is going to pay all her bills? S
