CHAPTER FOUR
It's been a month since I last saw Thane. I was happy. It has given me time to heal and align myself with my husband's cheating. I now understand the husband I married isn't the same person who showed himself to me a month ago. Or he has always been this way.
"Diana," Yvonne ran towards me. Her little legs picked up dust. She has been my joy. And I cannot believe what my husband couldn't find out, she did.
"My little angel," she jumped into my hands and picked her up, twirling her around the playground.
"Are we still having the picnic today?" She's just so cute. She reminds me of a child I would have loved to have.
"Yes, dear. I am here, aren't I?" I give her a sweet smile. This little angel has grounded me. Never leave me alone on nights; I just want to cry.She would sit there and hold me.
"Yvonne?" I have always wanted to ask her a question, but I never found the right time to. I might as well do so now.
"Yes?" She arches an eyebrow at me. Her expression and everything is just so precious. I never thought I could love another human apart from my husband.
"Diana?" She smiles at me. Sometimes, she acts older than her age. Her emotional intelligence is just top-notch.
"How did you know I was no longer blind?" This is the question that has been racing through my mind for some time. I knew I could trust her, if not the entire orphanage, who have known my secret by now, but no one did apart from him.
"My mom was once blind," she gives me that sweet, toothless smile of hers. Her front was still missing and hadn't grown back.
"Did she ever recover her sight? Is that how you found out?" I was bombarding her with questions, but my curious mind won't let me be until I get some answers.
"Yes, she did. Although she couldn't enjoy her new sight before she died.
" I was expecting that. I mean, if her mom were still alive, she wouldn't be here now.
"Do you want to talk about it?" It was weird asking a girl of nine if she wanted to talk about what was hurting as though I was conversing with an adult, but Yvonne was more adult than some of the adults that I have been around.
"Not really, Diana. She didn't die in a good way." Huh. What does she mean? With the way her lips were tightly pressed together, I knew she wouldn't be telling me more if I asked her, so I didn't push further.
"I don't know if I should say this, Diana. But I don't think your husband is a good person." How did she find out? Has Thane brought his man-whoring self to this orphanage as well?
"Why do you say so?" I tilt my head to look at her, giving her a playful smile. She shyly avoids my gaze and brings her head down.
"I apologize in advance if I am being rude for saying this." Her eyes dart everywhere but won't look at me.
"I don't mind. I want to hear what you have to say." I wanted to carry this little one on my legs and pat her. She's just too young to be this wise. Now, I want to know what her story is.
"Alright," she smiles at me. Her smile is always so warm.
"My father, he is a bad man. So, I know a bad man when I see one. Isn't he the reason why you are still acting blind?" Touché, young one. She had hit where it hurts most. Thane was certainly the reason why I was still acting blind. Even at the orphanage, his people were around here. The only ones I trust are the little ones.
"Diana? Did... Did I say something wrong?" I meet her gaze, and I see tears already gathering in her eyes.
"No, dear. You didn't. You are right." And it's because you are right; that's why it hurts so much.
"I am so sorry." She runs into my arms, drawing me into an embrace. Wrapping her tiny arms around me. It was the best hug ever.
"Diana."
"Hmm."
"I heard the nun talking about your husband. They said he would be coming today." I stiffened at her words. Why is he coming now? And why didn't he call like he has been doing? Yvonne and I were busy running around the field when a car drove inside the orphanage. I know that car. I would know it anywhere.
It was Thane’s. He was here just as Yvonne said. Panic rushed through me.I glanced at my hands. Scared, he might have found my secret, but when I felt my walking cane in my hands, I knew I was safe for another day. Or so I hope I would be. Thane was a smart man after all.
"Diana, it's going to be alright. I promise I won't tell"
Yvonne whispers innocently. How low have I fallen that a child is now my confidant? Thane jumps out of the car with the maid he sleeps with. Although they weren't clinging to each other. I just stare straight ahead.
"Diana." Thane pushed Yvonne off, pulling me into a hug.
"Thane? Is that you?"
"Yes, babe. I am here to take you home." Take me home at past 6pm?
"But, before that, I have something to ask you and your little friend." He beckons to scared Yvonne. She looks at me, but I can't do anything.
"Thane? Why do you need to talk to us?" My voice sounded a little too syrupy for my liking, but I don't have a choice because the way he was looking at Yvonne was scary.
"Come along now, be a good girl." He ignores my question as usual. He grips Yvonne and drags me along.
Should I stop acting now?…
