Luca knitted his brows. ‘Who gave the order to make the suspects suffer?’
The officer shrugged. ‘I got it from the deputy chief, who must have gotten it from someone else. The chief, I suspect.’
Other than the mayor, only Austyn had that kind of sway over the chief.
‘He’s throwing his weight around just to seek revenge for his woman?’ Luca thought.
Wasn’t that a little over the top?
‘Take me to their cell,’ Luca said. ‘Who are they, anyway?’
He thought they had to be pretty connected for Kayleigh to turn to Austyn for help.
‘Nobodies,’ the officer said. ‘No background or connections, at least none we’re aware of. No one has been to see them yet.’
Luca shook his head.
He refused to believe that Kayleigh, an A-lister with a full-time agent, two assistants and her company’s entire upper management at her beck and call, could not handle two nonentities.
He bet the report of her injuries was also grossly exaggerated.
All this drama, just to get Austyn involved.
