‘It was her job,’ Vivian said.
‘But she went beyond that,’ Kira said. ‘I was in university back then. Jocelyn spent more time with my father than anyone else. She shaved him, bathed him, read to him, talked to him like he was a regular person. I was grateful. Still am.’
‘I can’t take this.’
The envelope was full of cash.
Kira insisted.
In the end, Vivian had to accept it.
She was divorced and had to take care of her mother all by herself.
The money was, in fact, a lifesaver.
Kira had just stepped into the lift when her phone rang.
‘I’m downstairs,’ Austyn said without preamble.
‘How do you know where I am?’ Kira asked, then answered her own question. ‘Never mind. Stupid question.’
Ryan told him, of course.
Kira came out of the building and saw Austyn straight away.
‘What’s going on?’ She got into the front passenger seat of the Chrysler Pacifica.
‘Gideon disappeared.’
‘What?’ Her hand, reaching for the seat belt, froze mid-air.
