Technically, it was Henry’s bodyguard who pulled the trigger.
But Austyn wouldn’t have been shot if he had not tried to protect Kira.
Austyn stepped backwards immediately after hearing the answer.
He kept a wary distance between himself and the harmless-looking woman. ‘You shot me?’
‘Well, no, not exactly. I—’
‘You tried to kill me?’ Austyn didn’t let her finish.
‘I wasn’t…It wasn’t like that.’ Kira took a hurried step forward. ‘Would you allow me to—’
‘Stop!’ Austyn put up a hand, keeping her at arm’s length. ‘I think we are done here.’
His temples started throbbing.
The familiar pain was back.
He had to leave before he was seized by a fainting spell.
Austyn somehow got the feeling that this time, the migraine was triggered by what the woman said.
It was a lot to take in.
She called him by a different name, claimed to be his wife and said he had a whole other life in a different city.
He needed time to process the information and to seek verification.
