"You have to," my mother replied, narrowing her eyes at me. "And you better bring a female friend. I'll find someone for you if you don't have anyone to go with."

"Xavier, have you decided who you're taking?" my mother urged.
I forced a smile. "Mom, do I look like someone who can't find a date? Just watch, I'll invite someone right now."
