The cool night breeze, which filtered through the open window and carried with it the scent of pine and earth, did not soothe Sylara as she lay restlessly beneath the silken sheets in bed.
She had not slept through the night for weeks, and every time she closed her eyes, she had dreams in which she saw her sister, Sonya, trapped in some unidentified darkness. This night was no exception, and as she fell into a fitful sleep, the familiar scene started to play in her head.
Sonya was in front of her, wearing a long labor gown that was scarlet blood-stained on the white cloth. Normally bright and vibrant, her sister's eyes were sunken and lifeless, as if they were plagued by an unseen anguish.
As Sylara attempted to approach Sonya and get to her, her feet refused to comply, and her chest tightened as her heart contracted at the sight. She seemed to be motionless as she saw her sister's figure gradually start to disappear.
