After a death-like silence, a child's voice pierced through the air, crying out in agony.
"Mom! Mom!"
I turned sharply and saw a girl standing on the high gates of Harmony Sanctuary. Her face was streaked with tears.
Stumbling, she ran toward the explosion site but tripped on a loose stone. Her forehead hit the ground, and blood oozed from the gash. But she paid no attention to it and quickly scrambled to her feet.
It was Nora.
I had asked Darren where she had gone earlier. He told me that there was no sign of her when he arrived. I thought she had run off during the chaos, but now, it was clear.
These people had captured her, which explained why Cara had been forced to do their bidding.
My heart twisted painfully as if being wrung by unseen hands. I moved toward Nora, reaching out to hold her, but she swatted me away with a fierce slap. Her once-blank eyes were now filled with hatred.
Her gaze on me was that of someone staring at their enemy.
