I looked up to see Darren and gritted my teeth. I was surprised to run into him here. He looked at me through the glass, his eyes bright as he mouthed a question about why I was here.
I didn't respond. Instead, I packed my things and stood up.
"Cassie, what's going on?" He seemed to realize he was too eager and forced his smile to fade. "Did you get fired?"
After learning that Donn was my boss, he had been holding back his anger. He had tried to recommend other companies to me multiple times, but I turned them all down.
"It's just a leave of absence," I said coldly, shouldering my bag and turning to leave.
Darren had mostly recovered, so I had been visiting him less frequently. I had specifically warned him not to come to my home, so he would wait for me outside the apartment lobby after work, insisting on having me accompany him to the supermarket for groceries.
If I refused, he would threaten to come to my house for dinner.
I ground my teeth, knowing I had no choice but
