"Can you please stop making things difficult for Donn? Consider it a favor I owe you."
The room was so quiet that I could hear a pin drop. My breathing quickened. I knew my request might hurt Darren, but I was more concerned about Donn's well-being.
I couldn't see his expression in the dark, but I could feel his heartache as he struggled to respond.
"Okay."
"Thank you."
I truly appreciated it.
"Don't thank me," he said, his tone firm.
I fell silent, and we simply stared at each other, lost in our thoughts.
"Let's get some sleep."
"I'm afraid you'll be gone if I close my eyes."
His voice trembled at the end. He was clearly terrified of the thought.
"I won't," I replied, my heart fluttering slightly as I turned away from him.
Cocooned in the blankets, I curled up a bit. The weight on my chest finally lifted as I knew Donn was out of danger.
