Chapter 21
"So, this is what it feels like when a carefully planned surprise is ruined," Darren muttered in disappointment.
In the busy open space, children eagerly held their parents' hands, clapping and waiting for the fireworks to start. Darren walked through the crowd alone as he brushed past them. He finally understood what it felt like to be utterly alone.
On New Year's day, Darren showed up at my house with a large bag of gifts, only to be chased away by Mom with a broom.
"How dare a scoundrel like you still show up here? Shoo, get out!"
Mom stood at the door with one hand on her hip and the other gripping the broom, looking fierce. Hearing the commotion, I poked my head out to see what was happening. "What's going on, Mom?"
Mom quickly shut the door and waved her hand dismissively. "Just a salesman. Don't worry about it. He's probably a scammer!"
I nodded, pulling my head back in and resuming my spot in front of the TV though I had already caught a glimpse of Darren.
