Chapter 164
Cold air lingered in the parking lot. Helen and I stood in silence under the pale fluorescent light, and our faint breathing was the only sound lingering in the space.
The elevator doors were still open behind us. I pointed at the trail of blood on the ground and glanced at Helen. "Should we go after him?"
Catching that person would make things a lot easier.
Helen shook her head. "No, we're not going after him. It's pointless."
I recalled the amount of blood the man had lost and was confused. But before I could ask why, Helen explained, "Beware of an ambush."
Her words made me squint at the dark, shady emergency exit. It was the direction the man had fled in.
An ambush?
"Cassie, let's go," Helen called out to me as we headed toward the elevator.
I followed close behind. Helen pressed the button, and the elevator doors slowly closed until the two of us were in a confined space. Only then did I lean against the railing and relax.
