I lowered my head to reply, but a tall shadow loomed over me, blocking my way.

I was momentarily confused and lost for words. "What?"
He looked down at me from above, his demeanor emotionless, like a cold and unfeeling robot. "Are you coming with me?"
I asked, "Why didn't he come himself?"
"He can't come."
My heart sank, and I quickly deleted the message I had typed to Mom about going home to eat, replacing it with one saying I'd be working late and for her not to wait for me.
I looked at Connor. "What's going on?"
