Chapter 2 Leaving

Soon, Elaine packed her things, took a deep look at the place where she had lived for five years, and left the keys on the table before turning to leave. Leaving the apartment, Elaine carried her luggage, looking at the bustling crowd, suddenly unsure of where to go. New York City was so vast, yet she had no place to go. Standing by the roadside for a moment, Elaine took out her phone and transferred all the money that Wes had given her over the years back to him. As Wes received the text notification from the bank, he was busy handling work documents. "What's this about?" The man's expression remained indifferent, but Shawn, who had just rushed back, could clearly sense that the CEO was not happy. After following the CEO for so many years, he had developed a keen sense of perception. "Miss Elaine said, since it's over, it's better to end cleanly," Shawn handed the card and contract to Wes. To be honest, Shawn was also surprised. He initially thought that Miss Elaine was just acting with the CEO for money, and her tears were only because she would lose her "unlimited ATM" in the future. But what surprised him was that Miss Elaine really didn't want these things. Wes frowned. "Did she really say that?" Shawn nodded. After a long silence, Wes suppressed the rare emotional fluctuations and looked at the contract coldly. "Let her be. Handle it cleanly." Shawn sighed lightly in his heart, feeling sorry for Miss Elaine, who had a tear-stained face. He wanted to say a few words of comfort, "Miss Elaine, she..." Wes's eyebrows furrowed slightly as he interrupted, "Don't mention her to me again." Shawn tactfully closed his mouth and left the CEO's office without saying more. After Shawn left, Wes stared at the contract for a long time, thinking of Elaine's bright smile in the morning, feeling a bit displeased. It seemed that she didn't care about their five-year affair at all. With this in mind, Wes no longer focused on unimportant matters and continued with his work. After leaving the apartment, Elaine quickly rented a house and moved in with her luggage. She had wanted to seek refuge with her friend Katrina, but the thought of Katrina living with her boyfriend now made it inconvenient, so she gave up on that idea. Unlike Wes's luxurious apartment, the house Elaine rented was simply furnished, with nothing but the basic furniture. But at least the rent was cheap. After tidying up the house, it was already evening. Elaine opened her phone, intending to order takeout, but found that Wes seemed to dominate the entertainment sections of various apps. Even the top trending topics were occupied by him. The striking headlines instantly pierced Elaine's heart. "[Childhood Sweethearts Reunited, Wes's Beloved Moonlight Turns Out to Be Her!]" Trembling, Elaine clicked to open it. A somewhat blurry photo jumped into view. The man in the photo stood tall, with deep features and a handsome face. Even though the image was blurred, it was hard to hide his handsomeness and nobility. Who else could it be but Wes? In the photo, Wes was slightly tilting his head, looking down at the petite and beautiful woman beside him. A rare smile appeared on his usually stern face. Indeed, the two of them looked very compatible. What surprised Elaine even more was that the woman in the photo seemed to resemble her somewhat. A ridiculous idea suddenly took root in Elaine's mind. Was Wes so eager to terminate the contract in order to clear away obstacles and welcome back his moonlight? Was she just a substitute? No wonder he was willing to spend millions to buy her back then. It turned out to be like this... Elaine stared dumbfoundedly at the couple in the photo, finally waking up. Wes had never loved her. It had been a substitute game from beginning to end. After sitting in a daze for a long time, Elaine finally came to her senses and looked at her phone with a bitter smile. Since that was the case, she should completely give up on this absurd relationship. Tomorrow, she would resign and stay far away from Wes. This kind of humiliation and pain of being deceived once was enough. The next morning, Elaine put on delicate makeup and went to resign from the company. For these years, she had been working in Wes's company. Although she hadn't relied on Wes and had established herself in the company with her own abilities, now that she had broken up with Wes and discovered that she had been a clown all along, Elaine, as deeply affectionate as she was, didn't want to continue working in the company. She wanted to cut off all ways of seeing Wes. After arriving at the company, Elaine finished writing her resignation letter and was about to go to the pantry to make a cup of coffee to refresh herself when she suddenly heard her colleagues chatting in the pantry. Her hand paused abruptly. "Do you know? The CEO's moonlight is also joining the company!" "What's going on? She's Wes's moonlight. Is she going to join the company and work as a grassroots employee like us without any status?" "How is that possible! I heard she's going to be the CEO directly!" "My god! Wes spoils his moonlight too much!" "Who says no..." ... The voices of her colleagues were like needles, causing Elaine's heart to ache once again. She lowered her head, unable to bear it, and hurriedly left. However, sometimes, the more you try to escape, the less chance you have. As Elaine passed by the elevator, she saw the CEO's exclusive elevator open with a "ding." She instinctively looked towards the elevator and her heart stopped. A familiar figure walked out of the elevator, tall and straight, with a stunning face, like a nobleman described in books, noble enough to make people feel inferior. It was Wes. Elaine was stunned, and then she saw a delicate, fair hand reach out from the elevator and hold Wes's hand. Wes didn't seem to reject it. After a slight pause, he held the hand back and led the woman out of the elevator. Elaine's breath hitched, her heart tightening suddenly. There was nothing more cruel than seeing your beloved walking hand in hand with another woman. Elaine turned her head away, fleeing back to her workstation in a disheveled manner. Before Elaine could calm down, Wes led the person over, followed by a group of department heads. "Hello, everyone. My name is Hanna, the new CEO. I hope we can get along well in the future and work together." Her cute and lovely self-introduction easily won everyone's favor. Even Wes, as he looked at Hanna, showed a hint of indulgence in his eyes. Elaine dared not look up. Afraid that she would burst into tears the next second. After a simple self-introduction, Hanna led Wes away to the CEO's office. Watching the two figures walk away, the colleagues around quickly gathered together to discuss, their words full of envy.
