As soon as Brunel finished speaking, Barlow hurried away, as if terrified that staying even a moment longer might result in some sort of trouble with me.
I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. It seemed that Barlow had been thoroughly intimidated by Susan, and now, just the sight of me scared him.
I turned my gaze to Brunel, who had been watching me, and smiled, “What’s up? Is there something you need?”
“Are you on a date with him?” Brunel asked directly.
I stretched a little and replied casually, “Whether it’s a date or not doesn’t really concern you, does it?”
“I admit, you’ve helped me and stood up for me, and I’m grateful. But that doesn’t give you the right to question my personal life.”
Brunel, sensing the boundary, wisely shifted the conversation, “Weren’t you and Alan supposed to attend Annie’s engagement party together today? Why didn’t he take you home? Why are you here alone?”
I responded nonchalantly, “Oh, he ran off with his little mistress at Annie’s engagement party.
