Sarah smiled, the awkwardness palpable as she looked back and forth between me and someone who was standing behind me. “That’s great, I guess. But do you think it’ll be a little bit different if he wasn’t in a relationship?”
I shrugged. “Oh, no, not about that. It’s enough,” I said, walking away. “I’m not even a fan. I just don’t like it when people spread rumors that make absolutely no sense.”
I turned to Janice, who looked totally hurt. “Oh, hi,” I said, though it wasn’t actually a high. I took a seat. “Did you hear the news?” I asked her, not waiting for a response as I launched into the same story I had told Sarah. Janice’s face turned to a look of total horror, and she looked towards the floor as though something interesting was there. But I didn’t stop gloating. I enjoyed every second of it, and I tried to relate the subject we were discussing back to the news as much as I could.
