A slight wave of dizziness hit me as I kept looking at the rose and the paper—neither of which made any sense. It wasn’t Valentine’s Day, and neither was it my birthday. That had passed, along with Valentine’s Day, so neither made a proper excuse for the items on my desk. I glanced at the rose again. It was a beautiful half-bloom piece of dark red life attached to a stem that was now mangled, as though it had been used to strangle someone. It was flattened in some places and otherwise harmed in others. Still, however, some parts of the thorns were sticking out in all directions.
