The prospects of disappointing those whom I had personally invited to the Gala hung in the back of my mind. Of course, Harold had said he would cover for me, but it still nagged at me. It sat right next to the thought of finding all the fanfare important—which, at this moment, simply wasn’t.
I looked back, hoping to see my driver, but the man had all but disappeared. Maybe I should find him, I thought to myself as I reached into my pocket and climbed up the stairs, a blur of the many pictures being taken around me. Once inside, I began looking fervently for Harold.
“Hey,” I said once I found him, patting him on the shoulder.
“Damian.” My eyes finally found a pleasant face among the investors I had invited—Mrs. Gramley, the sole owner of a billion-dollar empire. No children, no husband, and she was said to be donating most of it to charity.
