Chapter 4: Serin and Sarah

I woke up not three hours later due to noises coming from outside of my bedroom. It sounded like chattering and then shuffling. Just as I sat up, they disappeared. A part of me wondered if it was Sol making noises in the kitchen. I was surprised to see a human woman. She was ransacking the cupboards with a piece of bread in her mouth, and we both froze as we saw each other. "Um, hello?" the brown-haired woman greeted me as her equally hazel eyes gave a cautious look. The woman was beautiful, no doubt, and made me fidget slightly in her gaze. Sol had mentioned his family could visit, but this woman in front of me was definitely human. "Hello…" I replied cautiously. "Who… Who are you?" Was she a woman Sol had brought here for the night? Thinking of it, I suddenly felt irritable and restless. "Hahaha, I could ask you the same question." The woman laughed as she walked toward the counter in the middle of the kitchen and sat on top with food in her hands. "It isn't like Sol to have strangers walking around his home." "Actually, I'm not the stranger. I was... Mr. Montgomery, uh, Sol, he..." I found it easy to talk to the woman. Perhaps some part of me took comfort in the fact that she was human. I walked closer to her as I rested my back against the opposite counter. "He asked me to call his name directly. I am his..." "Are you his lover?" I was interrupted and sputtered at her question. I broke out into an immediate coughing fit. "I'll take that as an enthusiastic no." A second strange voice rang out into the kitchen. I straightened my back when I noticed the presence of a male. He had curly brown hair sitting on top of his head, a sharp nose, and blue eyes that stared down at me. Immediately, my senses sharpened and moved from that relaxing stance. This man was a vampire, a pureblood like Sol. Maybe he was about the same age from what I could tell about his presence. "Is he asleep?" the woman asked the man. He nodded. I watched as he moved toward her. I didn't miss the look of adoration on his face when he embraced her and laid a kiss on the woman's cheek. "You must be Mia, am I right?" I blinked at the man when he turned toward me and nodded my head dumbly. "Oh!" The woman was surprised. "The one Sol mentioned? My, she is a beauty! You're definitely a beautiful girl. Well, I know the reason why he seems so infatuated with you." The confusion must have shown on my face because I heard the man laugh lightly before explaining the situation. "My wife means Sol told us about you before he went to sleep for the day, just in case we showed up and happened to cross paths. My name is Serin, and this is my wife Sarah, we–" "Your wife?" I repeated with a pair of widened eyes before he had the chance to finish his sentence. I watched as the two of them looked at me with confusion. Something passed through Serin's eyes, and Sarah tilted her head at me in question again. "Yes, my wife," Serin repeated slowly, a cautious feeling seeped into the air as I stared at them. "But she's human," I said. He nodded. "Is that going to be a problem?" he asked slowly. I would have doubted that he had the ability to control his thirst if I wasn't so shocked at their pairing. "And you're a pureblood," I emphasized, trying to will my mind make sense of the situation. "Oh, trust me," Sarah quickly interjected with a light tone, "I was as shocked as you are right now when I first learned about it! This idiot didn't even tell me until we were married! Of course, I was so mad at him at first, but…" I watched with widened eyes as she grabbed his cheeks and squashed them together. "Who could stay mad at this face?" I couldn't help but think about the situation in front of me. I had never thought I would witness a pureblood vampire being married to a human one day, even though my deceased mother was a human. Sarah squished his cheeks as if it were not a big deal. Without a hint of annoyance, it seemed like the adoration in Serin's eyes grew at her gesture. "Stop it," he said as he laughed and moved his face out from her grasp. "You don't even know her, and now you reveal all our stories to her." After Serin raised his eyebrows, Sarah pouted. He placed a quick kiss on her lips. "Oh, please." Sarah waved my presence off. "If she was so much of a threat, Sol would never have thought twice of bringing her here and letting her live in this house. We once thought he had lost interest in all the women in this world." She turned to me and asked, "You're a half-blood vampire, aren't you?" I nodded my head slowly. "I got quite good at spotting the difference," Sarah tapped her nose, "hanging out with this lump long enough. I finally managed to learn a little about your supernatural world." She elbowed him in his side, and he pushed at her lightly. I could only stare at the two of them as they bickered. "I'm sorry. I knew I was rude when I saw you two." I gestured to Serin. "You look..." "Strange? Crazy?" Serin supplied. "We heard that a lot. Well, we tend not to hang out frequently in society to guarantee Sarah's safety, but… Yeah, that's the general reaction. We are used to it." "No." I shook my head and furrowed my brows in confusion, "No. I was going to say… normal. You two look like a normal couple. Well, I would never say strange because I am half-blooded. My parents..." I suddenly stopped my tongue. I would rather never mention them. Luckily, they seemed not to notice it. As I said, I was half-blooded. I could understand them, although I doubted Serin several minutes ago. It was their turn to look at me with a shocked expression. I couldn't help hiding my smile. "Well," Sarah said as she turned to Serin, "that's new, isn't it?" "Very new." Serin agreed. "It looks like Sol finds a special and interesting girl. By the way, where did he find you?" For me, this pure-blooded vampire was also a special pure-blooded vampire, like Sol, who was not interested in my blood or human blood. "The hotel. I was working at the ball when he… Well, he kind of saved my life actually. He invited me to be his assistant," I answered his question friendly. "Are you two badmouthing me?" I turned my head when I heard Sol's voice come through the door of the kitchen. His eyes were still heavy with sleep as he rubbed them. He had changed his rich suit to some looser clothes. My eyes snapped up from his clothes to his eyes. I saw he was already looking at me with an amused expression. I turned away as my face went red and looked back to Sarah as she spoke. "Nothing, Sol." She rolled her eyes as she hopped from the counter and gave him a hug and a quick kiss on his cheek. "We came here to drop off those files you asked for." She landed a tap on top of his head despite having to stand on the tips of her feet. "Stop overworking my husband." Sol only laughed, which was still riddled with tiredness. His is voice had become deeper as he spoke. "Yes, Ma'am." "It's so nice to meet you, Mia." Sarah grabbed her bag. It looked they were going to leave. "Me too. Mr. uh…" I realized I didn't know their surname. "Please, just call me Sarah. You can call him Serin." She was very friendly. "Okay, Sarah." After Sol saw them out of the house, he returned to the living room where I was gathering my things. "Sorry, I thought you might have slept through it." "Don't worry." I shook my head. "They are friendly." "Bit of a culture shock?" "What do you mean?" I asked. He nodded his head in their direction. "They are married." I shrugged. "It's not common in human society, but it seems natural with them." I bit my lip before making my way to the door. "I should go now. I have classes in a few hours." We lingered at the door for a moment as he opened it for me. "Will you come back?" I paused and looked up at him, considering his strange question. "Why not? I need this job." ###
