At Willie's remark, several people in the boutique turned their attention toward Ruby. The air grew tense, the awkwardness palpable.
It was surprisingly easy for Ruby to be generous with someone else's money.
Willie frowned slightly and said gently, "Ruby, this bag isn't exactly cheap. Maybe you should look at some other styles."
She had put it as tactfully as she could. Even the sales associate nearby remained silent, pretending to be busy.
Ruby, however, remained oblivious to how out of line her comment was. She glanced at me again and said, "Willie, you're giving away such a great bag. Why not just sell it to Ms. Lancaster instead? At least you'd get your money back and could order something else."
Willie's expression darkened. "This bag was a special order that took a lot of effort to secure. It's not something to casually pass on. Besides, how do you know what Ms. Lancaster wants?"
