Chapter 7 The Warning
The next morning, I woke up with all the incidents that transpired the previous night fresh in my mind and a sick feeling in my stomach. Kai and I impartially glided through the cottage ping-ponging around from chore to chore as if in a trance. The warning we got given was a very concrete realization of the threats that exist around us, and the realness of our situation has never felt as tangible.
Sitting for our breakfast the tension was strong inside; no words were said but an anxiety of the unknown can be felt. I can still remember the black envelope and what was written in it so I just pretended to eat my food. Kai appeared just as lost and was quietly staring into the middle of nowhere while intermittently drinking his cup of black coffee.
Last of all I could contain myself no more. “Kai,” I started, almost in a whisper, “what if this is not enough? What if they locate us here?”
