Once Janine settled into the car, she turned to Shirley, her curiosity barely contained. "Why are you dragging me to the Gray residence? What happened to Nancy?"
Shirley explained the call between Jessica and Nancy the previous night.
Janine had reacted just as Shirley did from the night before. "Oh no, Nancy must've gotten the worst of it. Why didn't you stop her?"
"I tried," Shirley sighed. "It's a long story."
By the time Shirley finished recounting everything, they were already halfway there.
Janine listened attentively, as if engrossed in a gripping drama. She didn't even have the chance to vent about Evan, as she leaned closer, and asked curiously, "Did Benjamin get into a fight with Samuel when he barged in to take you?"
Shirley could only shake her head. "I don't know. I was unconscious. Benjamin hasn't told me anything either."
"What? How could you not know something that important?"
