Emelie's expression remained calm because she thought it was absurd. "Do you even know what you're saying, Beathan?"
She rose to her feet, her gaze steady and cold. "My mother collapsed in the middle of a crowded street. Wesley's men personally confirmed her death. My sister prepared her remains, and her ashes were buried in Alderbrook.
"Her portrait sits in our home, and I go and look at it every week. And now you're telling me that she isn't dead?"
Was he seriously trying to dodge responsibility by faking insanity?
Beathan chuckled. "Exactly. Who knows how William did it? He somehow made everyone think Mrs. Hoven died in public, only to secretly save her and hide her away.
"If I hadn't stumbled across her by chance, I wouldn't have known. Turns out, the person who didn't die three years ago wasn't just you, Emelie."
Emelie didn't believe him, but a tightness crept into her throat. "You've seen her? My mother?"
