Callie suddenly turned to Zane with a look of grievance. She said, "Ms. Tarbor brought you dinner, and you didn't even tell me in advance. Look, now my food seems a bit unnecessary."
"It's not unnecessary," Zane said. He took her food container with a neutral tone. "I'll eat what you made."
Callie smiled sweetly. "Then I'll have the food Ms. Tarbor brought. It looks so delicious. It would be a waste not to eat it.
Zane didn't respond. I pushed the food container toward Callie and said with a smile, "If you like it, feel free to have more."
After a pause, I added, "You two enjoy your meal. I have some things to take care of, so I'll be leaving now."
Callie quickly asked, "Aren't you going to eat?"
"I've already eaten," I replied with a faint smile and headed for the door.
As soon as I stepped outside, I heard Callie ask, "Zay, why do I feel like Ms. Tarbor really dislikes me?" Her voice was tinged with sadness.
