When Whitney pushed the door open again, Thomas was gone, and Noel was the only one left in the room.
She was scanning the room when Noel spoke in a cold, calm voice.
"What are you looking for?"
Whitney shook her head. "Nothing."
"You've been crying."

When she had retreated to the restroom earlier, she hadn't wanted to cry. But with no one around, the suffocating emotions she had been holding back had overwhelmed her. Her throat trembled, her eyes burned and stung, and the tears just fell uncontrollably.
