Chapter 10 Is He Crazy

Whitney remained silent. She knew Damian was doing all of this to keep the peace and to prevent her from canceling the wedding. Becoming an architectural designer and seeing Margaret wake up were both her dreams. Now, Damian had placed both of these things right in front of her. Should she swallow her pride and stop being so stubborn? At that moment, Damian's phone rang. It was on the table, and Whitney saw that the caller was Rachel. Damian tapped the decline button. "Whitney—" The phone rang again—still Rachel. Whitney gave a faint smile. "You might as well answer it." "It's your birthday. I don't want anyone disturbing us." Damian hung up without hesitation. "Promise me. Come home with me tonight, okay?" He kept repeating the question. Whitney had finished her meal, so she stood up. "You should handle your own matters first. I'm not considering moving back in now." With that, she walked toward the door. Damian chased after her and grabbed her arm. "There's nothing to handle. But if you won't come back, I won't push you. I'll give you a ride to Coaska Heights." Before she could respond, Damian shoved her into the passenger seat and started the car. Rachel's calls kept coming in. Since Damian's phone was connected to the car's Bluetooth, the navigation screen kept switching to the incoming call page. "Aren't you really not answering?" Whitney was already tired of hearing the ringtone. Damian decided to switch off his phone. With a solemn expression, he said, "There are others in the Howard family. If she really needs something, she can contact someone else." Whitney got out of the car when they arrived at the entrance of her neighborhood. She thanked him briefly and started walking home. "Whitney." Damian quickly followed. "I'll wait for you to come home." Whitney didn't say anything and simply walked past him. As soon as she entered her apartment, Yvette Jennings called to send her birthday wishes. "Sorry, I'm still out of town on business. I can't be with you today. Don't feel lonely, though. I'm with you in spirit." Yvette had always been there for Whitney when Damian couldn't make it for her birthday. "I'm not lonely. Damian just celebrated it with me," Whitney said casually as she poured herself a glass of water. "Mr. Howard actually has time? How rare!" Yvette said, surprised. Then, she added, "Whitney, don't think I'm being a downer, but you've got to be careful when a man suddenly changes. Even so, Mr. Howard is so good to you. Maybe there's nothing to worry about." Whitney chuckled bitterly. This was the impression Damian gave to everyone. "You're not being a downer. That's the truth," she replied. Yvette immediately picked up on the tension in her voice. "Are you saying there's something going on with Damian?" "I'll tell you in detail when you're back from your business trip." "Alright. No matter what, I'll support whatever decision you make." Yvette could tell from Whitney's words that there was something serious going on. After hanging up, Whitney received a voice message from Helena Howard. "Happy birthday, my dear future sister-in-law! I'll send your gift to your villa tomorrow. Have a nice celebration with Damian. I won't be a third wheel." Helena was Damian's younger sister. She had a good relationship with Whitney. As a top lawyer, she was often busy and didn't know that Damian wasn't around for Whitney's birthday every year. Although they were close, Whitney didn't plan to tell her the truth since Helena was part of the Howard family. "Thanks! I didn't see you at the last family gathering. Let's go out for a meal sometime," Whitney replied. At some point, it started pouring rain outside. The water on the glass seemed to have been splashed on. One of the windows was still open, and the rain had already swept inside. As she replied to the message, she went over to close the window. Out of the corners of her eyes, she suddenly noticed a figure standing downstairs. With the light from the streetlamp, she immediately recognized that it was Damian. He hadn't left! Was he crazy? Why was he standing in the heavy rain? Whitney grabbed an umbrella and quickly changed her shoes before heading out the door. It wasn't until she entered the elevator that she realized her concern for Damian had become automatic, almost like a reflex. By the time she thought about turning back, she had stepped out of the elevator, and Damian had already seen her. Whitney had no choice but to approach him. The torrential rain had drenched him completely. "What are you doing standing here?" Whitney shielded him with half of the umbrella. "You didn't answer me earlier," Damian said. Seeing his face drenched in rain, she remembered what he had said at the entrance of the neighborhood—that he would wait for her to come home, but she hadn't responded. "You're standing out here in the rain just for that?" Whitney's tone was cold. "Damian, you said you wouldn't push me." Standing out in the rain like this was clearly pressuring her to agree to move back. "Trust me, Whitney. I've made things clear with Rachel. Can you forgive me?" Damian sneezed as he spoke. Seeing him drenched and shivering, Whitney couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy. Eight years of their relationship weren't something that could be severed just like that. Plus, he had done so much for her. Westley's words echoed in her mind again. She should consider the Spencer family's interests. Maybe she should forgive him this time. "Give me some time to think about it. I just moved into this place, and I want to stay here a bit longer." As soon as she finished speaking, Damian suddenly hugged her and said excitedly, "Okay! As long as you agree to move back, you can stay here as long as you want. Just not too long." His body was cold, and soon, her clothes were soaked through as well. In the end, Whitney relented. "How about you go upstairs and take a hot shower first? I'll have someone bring you dry clothes later." Something flickered in Damian's eyes at her offer.
