Taylor admitted, "I was unfair to you two years ago, but you can't change the past. You and I both have to look to the future." Bethany clasped her hands tightly without a word. He continued, "You've gone through a marriage. You should know that a divorce is an unhonorable affair." Tears welled up in her eyes. "Am I lesser in your eyes because I am divorced?" Without giving him the time to reply, she added, "Taylor, I haven't told you this, but Luis and I have never slept with each other—" He cut her off. "Beth, that's not what I mean. I'm trying to tell you that we shouldn't dream of getting back together because our lives are headed down different paths." A hint of impatience appeared on his face.
