Nathaniel did not seem particularly surprised to see Mavis at E&S Haven. Instead, the little boy holding his hand was bursting with excitement. "Mommy!" Callum broke free from Nathaniel's hand and sprinted toward Mavis, wrapping his arms around her. "Mommy, didn't you miss me? Why haven't you come to see me these past few days?" Mavis kissed his little cheeks and ruffled his short hair. "Of course I missed you. I missed you so much that I couldn't sleep at night. But something came up, and I couldn't visit you. I'm sorry." He did not press further, simply beaming. "It's okay! We're together now!" His big blue eyes were so full of joy that they melted her heart. "Come on," Mavis said, her heart softening as she held his hand. "I grilled a fish just for you. Let's have a taste." Nathaniel stood in place, watching them walk away together, hand in hand. Callum seemed to have forgotten entirely his father's presence when he saw Mavis, eagerly leading her away without
