Chapter 42: Into the Lion’s Den
Ava and Lucas followed Lydia Hartman through a maze of hallways, moving away from the bustling main ballroom into a quieter, more secluded building area. The walls were lined with dark wood paneling, and the air grew cooler and more still with each step. Lydia walked briskly, her heels clicking against the polished floor, her posture tense and guarded.
Ava felt a prickle of anxiety. She sensed that something was off—Lydia’s demeanor, how she had scrutinized their credentials and their direction. “Stay alert,” she whispered to Lucas, barely moving her lips.
Lucas gave a slight nod, his eyes scanning their surroundings. “This doesn’t feel right,” he murmured. “We’re too far from the main event.”
Lydia stopped abruptly before a set of heavy, ornate doors and turned to face them. “Mr. Hale is just inside,” she said with a tight smile. “I’ll be joining you for the conversation.”
Ava smiled back, though her instincts were on high alert. “Of course,” she replied. “Lead the way.”
