Chapter 56: Coming conscious
Her grandmother's face contorted in a mixture of sadness and regret.
"Oh, dear, I'm so sorry to put you through this," she said, her voice heavy with emotion.
"I feel like I've really stressed you out with this illness."
Jennifer's hands tightened around her grandmother's, her fingers intertwining with hers.
"Oh, no, don't put it like that, Granny,"
She said, her voice firm but gentle.
"I love you, and I would do anything for you."
Granny's eyes narrowed, her gaze piercing as she spoke,
"I know that devil Joseph wouldn't take an interest in my illness."
Jennifer bit her tongue, trying not to reveal the truth about Joseph's cruel indifference.
"Oh, he must be probably busy,"
She said, attempting to downplay the situation.
Granny's expression told Jennifer that she wasn't fooled.
"Oh, don't try to console me, Jen. I know how evil he is."
Jennifer's face remained neutral, but her mind raced with thoughts of Joseph's wickedness.
