Chapter Four: Invitation to a Banquet
Isabella settled at her desk, feeling a familiar comfort she hadn’t felt in years. Alone in her spacious office, she took a moment to appreciate its layout and design. Large windows brought in sunlight, accompanied by potted plants that added a touch of warmth. She quickly logged into her work account, finding a new design request from Alexander. He had sent her a document outlining the client’s needs. Isabella delved into her work, reviewing the file thoroughly before starting her sketch. She worked tirelessly from morning till late evening, even having her lunch brought in by Drake.
Noticing the light still on in her office, Alexander stopped by and knocked. “You’re still here?” Alexander asked “Just finishing up the design based on the client’s brief,” Isabella replied, smiling. “I was about to leave when you walked in.” Alexander looked at her work and said, “The client’s given us a week. You don’t need to rush yourself.” He admired her dedication and hardworking nature, studying the intricate details she captured in the sketch. “I’ve always been this way, preferring to finish things in one go, I’ve become used to it. Old habits die hard.” Isabella explained, reflecting on her old work habits. Glancing at his watch, Luke asked, “I’m off to a charity banquet tonight. Would you do me the honor of joining me as my date?”
Isabella hesitated, thoughts of her children at home making her pause before accepting” I need to check in at home first.” “Absolutely, I’ll be back” Alexander responded, stepping out to give her some privacy. She called Sofia, and Miles answered the phone. In his mature way, he reassured Isabella that he and Amelia were fine, encouraging her to enjoy her evening, she deserves it after all. Assured about her kids, Isabella picked up her purse. Before saying to Alexander “Boss, I’m good to go.” A dazzling smile played across Alexander’s face. “Fantastic, let’s head out.” They soon arrived at the venue for the charity gala.
Drake was waiting for them, holding a set of formal clothes for Isabella. “You might want to change into this; it was put together in a hurry. I hope it fits,” Alexander said. Isabella was surprised and appreciative about his gesture. She hadn’t anticipated this attention to detail from Alexander. “Thank you, I’ll just take a moment to change, I’ll be right back.” she replied, touched by his thoughtfulness. Alexander gave her a gentle smile. “No need to rush yourself.” Isabella was then guided to a makeup room arranged for the event. Despite Drake being a man, his expertise in makeup was impressive. Isabella realized everyone around Luke was remarkably skilled.
Looking at her transformed reflection, she recalled attending similar events in the past but never feeling as radiant as she did now. Drake, catching her gaze in the mirror, quipped, “Looks like I did a fine job.” “You’re being modest. It’s been forever since I dressed up like this, feels nice to look this gorgeous. Thank you,” Isabella replied. Drake gathered his things to leave. “It’s all part of the job. You should head to the banquet now. Sir must be waiting for you” Dressed in her sparkling fishtail gown, Isabella stepped out. She instantly drew attention, women casting curious glances her way. People whispered, “Who’s she?” “I’ve never seen her before.” ”She’s so stunning and gorgeous. I would love to meet her.”
Isabella brushed off the comments, unsure if they were about her. The charity banquet venue was enormous, making it hard for Isabella to spot Alexander in the crowd. Just as she was about to call him, Alexander appeared, making his way toward her. “Isabella” he called out. Relieved, she greeted him, “There you are, I was just looking around for you”.” Alexander gestured for her to link arms with him. “Apologies for the rush tonight. It’s also a chance for you to meet some key people in our industry.” Isabella linked her arm with his, thanking him sincerely, “Thank you.”
Isabella felt nervous stepping into unknown territory, being a plus one at an unfamiliar event, it was nerve-wracking. The worry of making a wrong move and becoming the subject of gossip loomed in her mind, this upper-class socialites aren’t the best when it comes to being kind. Sensing her unease, Alexander leaned in and whispered, “Just keep smiling tonight, don’t let anybody get to you. Leave the rest to me.” Relieved, Isabella looked up at him, finding a reassuring connection in their eyes.” Alright,” she agreed. Since slipping into her dress, Isabella sensed many eyes on her. What she didn’t know was Alexander rarely brought dates, which made her presence all the more conspicuous. Unaware of the whispers around her, sparked by curiosity about the woman with Alexander, Isabella stood beside him.
Noticing Alexander with his companion, Lorraine subtly mentioned to Sebastian that his uncle had a female guest. Sebastian, surprised, scanned the area Lorraine had indicated. “He’s never brought anyone before.” Then, Sebastian saw Alexander with an alluring woman. There was something familiar about her. With curiosity, Lorraine suggested, “Let’s go say hello to them,” and steered Sebastian toward them. As they approached, Sebastian recognized Isabella. His expression shifted, taken aback to see her with his uncle. “she shouldn’t be here” Sebastian thought in his mind. “Uncle, this is unexpected,” Sebastian said, trying to mask his surprise. Alexander nodded. “I’m introducing my new jewelry designer to our industry friends” Isabella, on her second day back, unexpectedly faced this unpleasant encounter with Sebastian. It was as unforeseen as it was unwelcome.
Lorraine, perceptive as ever, noticed Isabella’s lingering gaze toward Sebastian. Assuming it was merely another display of Sebastian’s charm, she felt a surge of pride within her , accustomed to his usual charming nature and thought little more about it. A new designer?” Sebastian asked his tone held a dismissive edge as he gave Isabella a cold glance. “Uncle, watch out. Nowadays, anyone can fake their credentials and claim to be a designer. Nowadays fraudsters are everywhere” Alexander’s demeanor cooled at Sebastian’s accusation. “I’m well aware of her talent. As a matter of fact, the ring you admired was designed by her. She’s a rare gem. I’ll share her design drafts with you tomorrow.”
Isabella felt disgusted when she discovered her design was for Sebastian. The idea of someone she considered a jerk wearing her creation was unsettling.
“Hello, I’m Isabella” Isabella greeted Frank with a restrained and forced smile. “Sebastian Thompson,” he replied, his smile lacking authenticity and sincerity. “And this is my wife, Lorraine Thompson. ”Nice to meet you both,” Isabella replied politely, her tone neutral, it was devoid of any emotion. “Uncle, did you check her background before hiring?” Sebastian interjected. “We shouldn’t just let anyone into the company. It might bring problems later on, trusting people blindly isn’t a trait of a good businessman” Alexander, with evident impatience, responded sharply, “My business is not your concern, you should learn to stay within your boundaries Sebastian. I hope you’re listen to me” “I’m just trying to help. I’m worried you might hire the wrong people but since my help is not needed, no worries,” Sebastian persisted.
