Upon hearing the news, Skye and I both stiffened, our faces falling. I couldn't believe it—Skye's hunch had been spot-on.
As we descended in the elevator, we found Lilith waiting for us at the entrance. Her face lit up with a cold, triumphant smile.
"So, Leon, Skye, how did it go?" Lilith's voice dripped with mockery. "Did you get the door slammed in your faces?"
I was perplexed by the sudden shift. Central Corporation had initially shown interest, only to abruptly change course.
I could only guess that Yaeger's behind-the-scenes maneuvering was at play. I couldn't think of any other explanation. As for Lilith, she simply didn't have the clout to pull something like this off on her own.
