Chapter 96 : Chopping block

The cart moves faster and faster as Jonathan gets more frantic. The only view we have is through the small square of glass that doesn’t even qualify for a window.
Maxine and I position ourselves at either side of the tiny opening, trying to catch a glimpse of what’s happening. At first, the only thing we see are the backs of the Unclaimed tenants’ uniforms as they gather around something. Their voices are blended together, muffled even though they’re out in the open.
But this time, I can hear some of their words, loud and clear.
“What’s happening to her?”
“Why are they here?”
Who? I want to ask. But the cart just keeps moving until we’re at the back of one of the buildings.
Jonathan stops the cart, climbing off the driver’s seat and opening the doors again. He tosses in two sets of grey overalls, not saying anything. He just gets back into the cart and waits. Maxine and I take this as a sign to dress up and blend in, so that’s exactly what we do.
