Chapter 92 : Revolutionary
MAXINE.
I stare at Paul, waiting for him to continue, but he just licks his lips and goes for the can of soda he’s supposed to be laying out for me. He finishes it in one gulp, and it’s getting more and more obvious to me that he’s nervous. Perhaps more than he’s willing to admit. Even when I let my expectant expression show, he just takes his time.
Finally, I can’t take the silence. I clear my throat, reminding him of my presence.
“Paul?” I ask carefully. “What do you know about my mother?”
“It’s the anniversary of her death today,” he mutters. “So many years, she’s been gone. I don’t even want to count anymore. It’s just not fair….”
His words drift off once again, taking with them his mind, it seems. He just heaves a sigh and stares off into the distance as though we’re not there, and I’m reminded of the times when he just seems to vanish into thin air when thinking about her. There is no doubt in my mind that he loved her, and my heart breaks with his.
