Chapter 61 : Witness

MAXINE. When I wake up, the first thing I see is a pair of yellow eyes. It must be Theo, I think to myself at first, but then the full face looms into view and I find myself sinking with disappointment. It's Ajax, and he's standing over me, inspecting my face. For a while, I consider pretending that I'm not awake, but he already saw me open my eyes, didn't he? He won't believe it. I close my eyes again, taking a deep breath as I feel his hands on both sides of my face. His touch makes me angry. His touch makes me feel dirty, for some reason. I want to pretend to be unresponsive for as long as I can if it means avoiding him, but the repulsion I feel becomes too much anyway. I take his hands and push them away from me. I notice that there are things dangling around my hand, and I realize that I'm strapped to an IV bag. "Maxine, calm down," he says softly, but that makes me even angrier. "Fuck off, Ajax," I spit in his face. I try to get up but my head starts to spin so bad that I
