Chapter 2 The Gift for His Fiancee

Right after Charlotte said those words, everything grew silent in the room. Jason glanced at her belly and asked with doubt, "What does that mean? Are you pregnant?" "No. It's just some random asking." Charlotte subconsciously denied it, but Jason didn't believe her. Charlotte tried hard to calm herself down and said in a relaxed tone, "Relax. We take precautions every time we do it, and I'm on pills." She was a bit nervous when she said that with sweat breaking out on her palms. She wasn't lying. However, since she had been taking birth control pills for a long time, the doctor suggested she stop taking the pills for some time for physical conditioning. Charlotte supposed a month off her pills wouldn't matter since Jason was taking precautions. Unexpectedly, during the month off her pills, she got pregnant. When Jason questioned her if she was pregnant, Charlotte decided to not tell him the truth. She knew that to him, she was a woman who would do anything for money, so forcing him to marry her with the baby would be pointless. Jason stared at Charlotte with a meaningful gaze. Seeing that she didn't look like lying, he held back his weird feelings and said indifferently, "Let's go now." Veronica Jules was holding her birthday party at the Jules Manor. When Charlotte and Jason arrived, there were already many guests around. Charlotte got down and opened the car door for Jason when Veronica came to him with a delighted smile on her face. "Jason!" Veronica was wearing a gown in pearl white. With exquisite makeup on her face, she looked gorgeous. When she stood next to Jason, the two looked like a stunningly perfect match. Charlotte could hear some guests whispering behind her, saying that the marriage between the Jules and the Langley families might be happening. Suppressing her bitter feelings, Charlotte took out the gift she had prepared. "Happy birthday, Ms. Jules." With a polite smile on her face, Charlotte handed a jewelry box to Veronica. "Mr. Langley bought this necklace from an auction not long ago. He hopes you will like it, Ms. Jules." Inside the box was a necklace where a large sapphire dangled under a delicate white gold chain. It looked crystal clear and glowing. Veronica's eyes instantly lit up. "Is it Tear of Ocean?" The necklace was designed and produced by Virse, a top foreign designer, and was the only one of its kind in the world, so it wouldn't be exaggerating to say that it was priceless. Veronica was pleasantly surprised. She wrapped her arms around Jason's neck and looked up at him when she said in a sweet voice, "Thank you, Jason!" She tiptoed to kiss him on the lips. However, before she could kiss him, Jason gently shoved her from him and said in a light voice, "I'm glad that you like it." A trace of fleeting resentment appeared in Veronica's eyes, but she didn't make it obvious. The news of her engagement with Jason had spread all over the city, but he hadn't made any response to it. At the thought of that, Veronica shot a glance at Charlotte. She had disliked Jason's personal assistant for a long time, only because Charlotte looked too attractive. Veronica thought that she was just like a siren with those amorous eyes and firmly believed that Charlotte had a sugar daddy. Veronica had tried to make Jason fire Charlotte by making a scene about it, but now, Charlotte was still working for him. Veronica gnashed her teeth and looked at Charlotte with a provocative meaning. "Ms. Seinfield, did you pick this gift for me? I didn't expect you to know something about jewelry, but I do remember that you majored in business management, didn't you? So, did you pick up jewelry on purpose? Unfortunately, my guests who have come to my birthday party are all people with status. I'm sorry that you won't get to flaunt your jewelry knowledge." Charlotte surely could get the meaning behind Veronica's words, which meant that she was merely an assistant, and if it weren't for the fact that she worked for Jason, she wouldn't have gotten the chance to enter the manor. Veronica was also saying that Charlotte picked up jewelry just to get a rich husband. "That might not be the case, Ms. Jules." Charlotte said, "Mr. Langley told me that you do jewelry collection, so I did some studies. Of course, I'm not as professional as you are when it comes to this aspect." Veronica didn't expect her to respond so calmly. Her face darkened. With an indifferent snort, she turned to look at Jason when she gently smiled and handed him the necklace. "Put it on me, Jason." Jason didn't take it. With a poker face, he merely glanced at Charlotte and said, "Ask her to do it." Veronica completely lost her temper. With anger filling her, she threw the necklace at Charlotte and said in a harsh tone, "Be careful. You will be sorry if you ruin it!" Charlotte took the necklace and nodded respectfully. "Yes, Ms. Jules. I will be careful." As she nodded, Veronica happened to spot the ambiguous mark on her fair neck, which was revealed from her collar. Veronica wondered, 'Is that a hickey? Did Jason plant it on her?' Instantly, Veronica felt stunned with fury overwhelming her and her sanity. She couldn't care less about anything else as she elbowed Charlotte hard. Standing behind Veronica, Charlotte was putting the necklace on her when she was caught off guard and slipped. As she was about to fall into the pool, she grabbed the one closest to her out of instinct, but still, she lost her balance, and both of them fell into the pool. "Ah!" Veronica screamed. She didn't expect Charlotte to pull her into the pool along with her. Hatred appeared in her eyes as she tapped the water and struggled. "Help! Help!" She screamed, "I can't swim!" Charlotte choked on the water Veronica splashed so hard that she suffocated. She gritted her teeth, trying hard to keep her balance as she grabbed Veronica's arm and pushed her to the edge of the pool. The servants of the Jules family rushed over and pulled Veronica out of the pool. She sobbed with a pitiful look and tried to hug Jason's waist. "She did it on purpose, Jason. She tried to drown me..." At that moment, Charlotte couldn't hear what people were saying. She had used up her strength when she pushed Veronica to the edge, and the faint pain coming from her belly made her unable to struggle. She even failed to float on the water. She wondered if she would drown there. Charlotte closed her eyes out of despair when a plop sounded next to her. Then, a firm and muscular arm seized her hard.
